When one feeds one's Nano Dipole with coax, common mode currents (CMCs) can be generated which can result in the feedline becoming part of the antenna system. this can degrade dipole performance and produce unwanted interference. Since we are working with QRP power levels, getting the most efficient antenna system possible is very important. We prefer to have all of the available wattage directed by the antenna radials, not the coax. On the receiving end, this also helps the coax shield from acting as a receiver, reducing noise levels. We have found this configuration to be most effective on 40, 30 and 20 Meters.

To reduce or eliminate these issues we have created an ultralight choke balun to compliment the Nano Dipole.
The purpose of a choke balun is to connect a BALanced system (your Nano Mono-band Dipole) to an UNbalanced feed-line (your coax). Our Nano Balun Consists of a FT50-43 toroid with 12 turns of 3-Element wire (see schematic) connected to a BNC Female connector for the coax and a BNC Male connector for the antenna. The whole system weighs approximately 1.25 ounces (36 grams). This makes it an ideal traveling companion for your antenna. Plus, it seems to us that the darn things always cost too much, so we have tried to present a value alternative to much higher priced gear.
Like all of our equipment, the choke balun is produced in a water resistant, highly durable form factor and is
tested on the air
before shipment.
