English Sporting Club "Bull Baiting" Early Pitbull Dog Breed Lithograph

Description

Printed in London in 1820 by T. McLean.  This print shows a particularly irate golfer urging the pit bull handlers to release the hounds. One can only speculate as to the reasons for his fervor. Once considered sport, bull baiting probably originated in Roman times. Bulls were matched against bears in pits built for the purpose throughout Europe.  Even if he won the main event, the bull most likely became the main course at the after party.  Very much pre-SPCA. Some condition issues along perimeter that could be remedied with matting. Subject matter area remains clean and bright.  Sorry, NO international sales.
